ASME Social Media Intern Scheme 2022-23
Are you a medic who loves a Tweet? Are you an Instagram guru, or a TikTok celeb? We want your help to change the world of medical education social media.
Social media is becoming increasingly influential in MedEd, acting as a key cog in disseminating good practice, facilitating debate and enabling important connections between educators. The ASME Social Media Intern scheme has been running successfully for three cohorts, designed to provide a supportive community for early career educators interested in social media learning. Our Interns are supported to develop innovations across a variety of online platforms, attend ASME events and learn more about the medical education world.
So, we’re back for more! If you’re interested in medical education and SoMe, we want your help. We want you to work with ASME and our partner journals Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher to create exciting SoMe resources. This is a great opportunity to develop your communication skills, gain mentorship and work alongside some of the most experienced and influential members of the medical education community.
These will be voluntary, one-year positions. Each SoMe Intern will be supported to develop a social media project of their choice, which may include some financial support. All successful SoMe Interns will be invited to present their work at ASME’s next Annual Scholarship Meeting (with registration covered by ASME and support for travel).
Entries should respond to ONE of the following four questions:
- Have you ever used social media platforms to run an effective medical education project? Please explain your initiative, detailing evidence of creativity and efficacy.
- How would you create a community of medical education award winners?
- How could you use social media to improve diversity and inclusion in medical education?
- How would you develop a social media project which has value for research?
Applications should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org through e-mail or WeTransfer for larger files. We encourage submissions in any format: your idea may be explained through word document essay, but we also welcome video pitches/demonstrations, infographics or posters. Creativity is encouraged.
Applications will be assessed based on their demonstration of:
- Effective communication in the context of social media
- Creative use of one or more social media platforms
- Ability to reflect on lessons learned during SoMe experiences
- Understanding of the risks and threats associated with SoMe
- Passion, enthusiasm and commitment to innovate in Technology Enhanced Learning
- Awareness of effective marketing or branding strategies
Entries are open to all individual ASME members, though this scheme will particularly welcome medical student entries, entries from those with Widening Participation backgrounds and entries from those from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. Significant prior experience in medical education, including publications or presentations, is not required.
All applicants must be an individual member of ASME before commencing the SoMe Internship. The deadline for submissions is 5pm, Monday 30th May 2022.

The SoMe Internship
Successful applicants will be appointed ASME SoMe Interns and will work closely with the ASME Board of Directors, specifically the Director for Social Media & Communications, as well as the Social Media Associate Editor of Medical Education/TCT and the ASME office. SoMe Interns will be supported with mentorship and gain valuable experience as part of a medical education charity. You will be offered the opportunity to co-shadow an ASME Director.
