A message from our President, Dr John Jenkins CBE
I am delighted that the 2017 ASME President's Medal is being awarded to Dr Lesley Pugsley,
to honour her long and distinguished involvement in and contribution to ASME over many years.
As a sociologist, fascinated by a broad spectrum of educational issues and settings, Lesley developed, and willingly shared with others, her wealth of
experience as a qualitative researcher. She served two terms as an elected member on the ASME council and during this time was instrumental in setting
up the Education Research Group, of which she was an inaugural member for 5 years. More recently she has willingly undertaken the role of ASME Treasurer
and assisted the Executive Committee in guiding the organisation through the processes of restructuring and incorporation. Lesley has also undertaken
a number of other senior roles, including as editor of Teaching & Teacher Education and editing the “How to” series, a regular
feature in Education for Primary Care and as reviewer for numerous journals in the field. She has given a great many conference presentations
and led workshops in the UK and across the world, even including since her recent and well-earned “retirement”! Throughout all of this, Lesley
has been noted by all who have come to know her for her willingness to devote her time and energy unstintingly for the benefit of ASME and
medical education more widely. Her long and productive career provides an excellent example to us all of how it is possible to contribute in this
way through the generous and consistent application of ability and determination. Lesley said "On receiving the news that I was to be the 2017
recipient of the President’s Medal, I experienced a mix of emotions. Surprise to have been considered a candidate; sadness, that my formal
relationship with the organisation is coming to an end, and absolute delight at having been honoured in this way."
Dr John Jenkins, in one of his last duties before stepping down as President of ASME, will present Lesley with her award at the ASME ASM 2017, 21 - 23 June in Exeter.
