The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) has announced Professor Shafi Ahmed as a keynote speaker at its Annual Scientific Meeting due to be held in Glasgow, 3rd – 5th July, 2019.
Professor Ahmed is set to deliver a first for any medical education conference by bringing augmented reality to his presentation on ‘The digital transformation of medical education’.

Keynote speaker, Professor Shafi Ahmed, says: “It’s time to disrupt medical education as we know it and make it more accessible and affordable by using all of the new technologies available to us. Embedding future technologies and entrepreneurship into the training of future doctors will not only make these training courses more accessible but will be crucial if we are to train the additional 50 million healthcare workers needed by 2030, according to the World Health Organisation. Improving medical education, especially the education of future surgeons, is one of my passions, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to present a keynote speech at ASME’s annual scientific meeting.”
Dr Jennifer Hallam, ASME’s Director of Events, says: “Professor Ahmed has unparalleled experience in combining the field of medical education with a global mindset, connectivity and virtual reality, and we are delighted to welcome him to our annual scientific meeting.”
Professor Shafi Ahmed is an award-winning cancer surgeon at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. He is also currently serving as an elected member of council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England where he is the Director of the International Surgical Training Programme.
