Martin graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Medical Psychology (1990) and MBChB (1993) from the University of Dundee, Scotland. This was followed by a year of teaching at St. Andrews University. Martin then trained as a General Medical Practitioner (GP) in Scotland becoming a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP). After completing GP training he moved to what was the Northern and Yorkshire region of England to train as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine. As part of training he completed a Master of Public Health degree (MPH, 2000) at the Nuffield Institute for Health in Leeds and worked as a Clinical Lecturer in Public Health Medicine. On completion of specialist training (2005) Martin became a Fellow of the UK Faculty of Public Health (FFPH) and worked as a locum Consultant in Public Health Medicine in Harrogate.
Martin then took up the position of Clinical Senior Teaching Fellow in Medical Education and Public Health at the University of Leeds (2006) progressing to become Associate Director of Learning and Teaching for the School of Medicine (2007-10); Director of Student Support (2010 to present); Director of the MPH programme at Leeds (2007 to 2012); Deputy Director of the Leeds Institute of Medical Education (2012 to present); and an Associate Professor (Nov 2013).
Martin has recently been appointed Chair and Director of Medical Education at the University of Bradford (Sept. 2017) to help take forward the University’s plans for a Medical School.
Martin is an Honorary Consultant with Public Health England; a Non-Executive Board Director for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He holds an Executive Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree (with Distinction) from the Leeds University Business School (LUBS) and has completed the Harvard Macy ‘Leading Innovations in Healthcare and Healthcare Education’ programme (2005) returning as Faculty on two occasions.
