Leadership Development

Mission StatementASME Logo RGB

Leadership Development seeks to support and promote the leadership development of healthcare educators and to disseminate good practice in educational leadership in the UK and internationally by:

  • Developing an international  network of educational leaders
  • Developing and training leadership faculty
  • Disseminating good practice in educational leadership
  • Providing a range of educational and clinical leadership workshops and courses for different groups
  • Collaborating with other associations and organisations to promote and deliver educational and clinical leadership events nationally and internationally

Our events

Our main activity is running workshops and courses as part of the Leadership Development Programme, these include FLAME (Fundamentals of Leadership and Management), CALM (Change, Adaptive Leadership and Management) and the ‘Developing Leaders (‘Windsor’) course. Each year, we run a pre-conference workshop at the ASME Annual Scientific Meeting, a week-long residential course in Windsor and a short course linked to the AMEE conference in late summer and the APMEC conference in Singapore in January/February. We can also offer bespoke educational leadership workshops and courses.

‘New Leaders’ Award

The New Leaders Award is an annual prize which recognises outstanding leadership in the field of medical education for those early in their medical education career. The award is designed to provide recognition for those who have taken a leadership or management role in undergraduate, postgraduate or continuing professional development that has had clear benefit and impact on improving the quality of learning, teaching or the patient experience. By early career, we mean medical students, doctors in training, lecturers, supervisors, support staff or mentors who have been formally involved in a leadership or management role or activity in medical education for less than five years.
