Bio:
I’m currently an Academic Foundation Year 1 Doctor towards the end of my first rotation, working on a ward that’s split between Diabetes and Endocrinology, and COVID patients. I’ll be moving on to Upper GI Surgery for the next four months.
I completed my medical degree from the University of Exeter in the summer of 2021, and also graduated with first class honours in Neuroscience the year before. I’m currently undertaking an MSc in Advanced Surgical Practice at Cardiff University alongside a PgCert in Clinical Education, which can get very demanding alongside multiple research projects and my full-time job as a junior doctor!
I have a particular interest in an academic surgical career, although I haven’t yet decided which speciality suits me best so I’m keeping my options open. I’m doing both research and medical education as part of my academic requirements for the foundation programme. I’ll be working with the assessment leads for the University of Manchester Medical School to determine the effective objective assessment of clinical reasoning in medical students.
I’m currently working on a few research projects in both clinical medicine and medical education. Particularly pertaining to education, I’ve developed a national teaching course with a fellow Academic Foundation Doctor which launches at the beginning of 2022, namely aiming to bridge the gap between final year medical exams and the requirements of a foundation doctor; it’s called Finals to Foundation if you’re interested in checking out our Facebook page.
I’d like to perhaps complete an Academic Clinical Fellowship, or an Educational Fellowship following my foundation training. I don’t think there’s any rush to commit to a speciality or become a consultant, so I’m trying to enjoy the process and learn as much as I can for now.
I can be found on Instagram via @musingsofamedic_ or by email unaiza.waheed@srft.nhs.uk if you want to get in touch.
