The Junior Association for the Study of Medical Education (JASME) is a career group within ASME for medical students. One of its key goals is to encourage, promote and conduct medical education research initiated by students and early career professionals. Therefore we are pleased to offer two awards each year to medical students and doctors for innovation in the field of medical education. The awards are to encourage and reward early-career medical educators, including students and early-career professionals, who show imagination and enthusiasm for developing new ideas in medical teaching or education.

JASME is pleased to award 2 cash prizes: 1 to a submission conducted as a medical student and 1 to a submission conducted as a foundation-year doctor who has already undertaken a project or piece or work surrounding an innovative and original idea within medical education.

Applicants should submit a description of their work, detailing:

  • How and why the innovation has been implemented
  • How this has changed educational practice
  • Applications should include reference to wider education theory and research. Higher scoring applications are highly innovative and provide evidence showing how the innovation will be sustained in future years. The work should not have been previously funded by ASME or JASME

The winner will be invited to present their work at the TASME Spring Conference in 2024. We also encourage you to submit your work in the Call for Abstracts process for the 2024 Annual Scholarship Meeting

Can I query the assessors’ decision regarding my application?

The assessors’ decision is final for all awards and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the outcome, other than providing the applicant with the result and the assessors’ feedback.

  • Applications should be made via the online submission form and should be anonymous (names of submitters should not be included in the submission documents
  • Submission documents should have the title of the submission at the start of the document
  • The submission should be attached to the online application and be an A4 document (minimum font size 12pt Arial font using Microsoft Word)
  • You are also advised to include your reflection in 200 words, in addition to the main body of your work (1000 words) within the same document. (Tables, headings and references are not included in the word count)
  • All applicants must be a member of ASME/JASME at the time of submission. Non-members can join ASME/JASME online for a small fee and experience the host of other student member benefits of ASME
  • Submissions via the online submission form should be received by 15th April 2024
  • It is expected that all projects have an element of evaluation or results at the time of submission. Those that do not have complete results will be marked according to our published mark scheme and their final score may be limited by this omission. We would recommend delaying submission to follow completion and evaluation of the project where possible
  • Submissions should not have been submitted to an ASME/prize/award before in its current form. Submissions that are resubmitted without significant changes will not be considered
  • ASME particularly welcomes applicants from diverse and under-represented backgrounds

We welcome your application.  Please look carefully at the criteria provided to be sure your applicant team and application meet the stated criteria.  Unfortunately, we cannot comment on whether specific applications or application ideas meet the criteria, since this is a group decision made by a panel of reviewers, but do let us know if the criteria are unclear

All information required to enter this award is published on this webpage. No discussions regarding possible entries or results of the judging will be possible. 
Entrants will be notified of their success or otherwise as soon as possible after the award deadline, please note, if an applicant is successful but unable to attend the TASME conference we may ask the applicant to provide us with a video to be presented at the conference.
