Selection in Medicine
Purpose of the conference
By bringing together the individuals and institutions interested and responsible for the selection of medical students and doctors the conference will seek to:
- Identify common principles implicitly and/or explicitly employed in the design, operation, interpretation, and use of selection processes for the different stages in a medical career
- Provide an overview of current practice for the three key stages of selection in medicine in the UK
- Critique current practice with a view to defining important areas for further research
Output from the conference
Formulation of an ASME position paper for wide dissemination to key stakeholders (medical schools, GMC (PMETB), Colleges, COPMED, COGPED, Governments)
Format of the conference
Three introductory presentations covering selection for medical schools, Foundation Programmes, and Specialty/GP Training.
The presentations will create the agenda for subsequent workshops covering issues such as:
- Social inclusivity
- Predicted value
- Fairness
- Reliability/validity
