Selection in Medicine

Purpose of the conference

By bringing together the individuals and institutions interested and responsible for the selection of medical students and doctors the conference will seek to:

  • Identify common principles implicitly and/or explicitly employed in the design, operation, interpretation, and use of selection processes for the different stages in a medical career
  • Provide an overview of current practice for the three key stages of selection in medicine in the UK
  • Critique current practice with a view to defining important areas for further research

Output from the conference

Formulation of an ASME position paper for wide dissemination to key stakeholders (medical schools, GMC (PMETB), Colleges, COPMED, COGPED, Governments)

Format of the conference

Three introductory presentations covering selection for medical schools, Foundation Programmes, and Specialty/GP Training.

The presentations will create the agenda for subsequent workshops covering issues such as:

  • Social inclusivity
  • Predicted value
  • Fairness
  • Reliability/validity
These issues will be examined specifically in relation to modes of selection such as UKCAT, GAMSAT, GP Selection, Foundation, and Specialty Training. Invited speakers include Professor Chris McManus, Professor Paul O’Neill, Professor Jane Dacre, Dr Alison Carr, Dr Fiona Patterson and Professor Sir Neil Douglas.
