Aim

The workshop aims to be inclusive and fun so as to make medical education research accessible to those who would like to conduct it, whatever their current level of achievement. The session will be interactive with participants required to submit a brief synopsis of their current research interest to the workshop. Your synopsis should be no more than a single page of A4 and include your research goals (either aims, questions or hypotheses), your motivation for conducting the study, and brief notes about what methodological questions you are grappling with at the moment. Please email your submission by 18th June 2012 to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Who is it aimed at?

Novice to intermediate education researchers including teaching staff who wish to build an education research portfolio, masters students, and beginning PhD students.

What are the objectives?

By attending the workshop, participants will:

  • Develop their understanding of what research is, and the distinguishing features of education (as opposed to biomedical research)

Develop skills in:

  • Choosing a topic and focus a researchable problem
  • formulating a clear research question
  • identifying and handling ethical issues
  • choosing an appropriate research method

Who are the workshop leaders?

The workshop will be led by a small team of experienced researchers who share a commitment to drawing people into the disipline and helping to build the capacity to conduct quality education research.

  • Lesley Pugsley, Senior lecturer in medical education, Cardiff University
  • Jane Stewart, Degree programme director for MCLinED programme and lecturer in clinical edication, Newcastle University
  • Jean McKendree, Associate Dean for assessment, Hull York Medical School

What form will the workshop take?

It will be highly interactive throughout. The main activity will be small group work, interspersed with short presentations and plenary discussion.

Pre course work

Participants will be asked to provide a summary of their current status and (if appropriate) details of their research plan (one side of A4) by Monday 18th June at 5pm, as well as details of specific topics they would like addressed. This will enable the faculty to finalise the workshop to ensure maximum effectiveness for all attendees. Please note this workshop will be interactive, and submitted work will be shared with all participants within the session.
