Workshop for Education Researchers (from complete novices to completing Masters/ PhD students) and Supervisors

Medical education research is a young discipline and many would-be researchers and supervisors have a steep learning curve to climb. ASME is running this workshop to foster the quantity and quality of UK medical education research.

Aim

The workshop aims to be inclusive, reasonably priced, and fun so as to make medical education research accessible to those who would like to conduct and/or supervise it, whatever their current level of achievement.

Who is it aimed at?

•  Novice to intermediate education researchers including teaching staff who wish to build an education research portfolio, masters students, and beginning PhD students
• Novice to intermediate research supervisors who wish to build their supervisory skills

What are the objectives?

 By attending the workshop, participants will:

• Develop their understanding of what research is, and the distinguishing features of education (as opposed to biomedical) research
• Develop skills in:
  • Choosing a topic and focusing a researchable problem
  • Formulating a clear research question
  • Identifying and handling ethical issues
  • Choosing an appropriate research method
• Understand better how to disseminate their work
•  Build networks with other participants that could lead to future collaboration

Supervisors will:

•  Build their understanding of how to help supervisees go through those processes
• Clarify the attributes of an effective supervisor

Who are the workshop leaders?

The workshop will be led by a small international team of experienced researchers who share a commitment to drawing people into the discipline and building their confidence in conducting/ supervising education research.

What form will the workshop take?

It will be highly interactive throughout.   The main activity will be small group work, interspersed with short presentations and plenary discussion.

Submission Requirements

Participants will be required to provide a summary of their current status and (if appropriate) details of their PhD/Masters (one side of A4) by Tuesday 19th August 2008. This will enable the faculty to finalise the workshop to ensure maximum effectiveness for all attendees.
