Career advice for medical students and doctors in training has been rather slow to develop, but with the advent of the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) initiative, all new doctors in training will make an application for specialty training in the second year of their foundation programme. This means that a systematic and comprehensive career service should be available to entrants to foundation programmes, and linked to planned initiatives in medical school.
We know that young peoples' ideas about medicine largely stem from popular culture, for example on TV and film. For many students career choice is almost a lottery influenced by a placement or a charismatic senior, and often varies wildly in the first few years after qualification.
MMC has provided funds to set up a career advice service in each deanery and this conference is an opportunity to share strategies and plan their future development. In addition it will allow networking between undergraduate and postgraduate providers, and facilitate synergy between their programmes.
